Roof Sheathing - Sipe Roofing
Are you curious about about how roofing contractors built their homes? Are you aware of the various materials? There are three types of roofing materials that are available: OSB, plywood, and built-up roofing. In this post, we'll discuss what each of these materials does and how they fit together to create the roof. Then, we'll talk about the Roof trusses and Sheathing. We hope you will understand the purpose of these materials for your home's roof towards the end.
Sheathing
Sheathing holds a roof together, and provides the strength and durability. Sheathing is utilized by roofing experts to keep the roof from sliding or to enhance its design. The most effective way to look for damaged sheathing is check the attic. If the roofline is curly and wavy, it's likely the sheathing has become weak. If you feel the wood bending it is likely that the roof has suffered a weakened sheathing.
Roofs that are built-up, made of plywood
Ply roofing sheets are special layers of fabric which are laid over the top layer of hot or cold bitumen. Ply sheets are typically reinforced with fiberglass and other organic substances. They also offer a stronger roof layer. These roof layers also keep from elements, and are long-lasting enough to be suitable for commercial structures. The most common width for sheets of plywood is 36 inches.
Roof trusses
Roofers have traditionally utilized rafters made of 2x8 and 2x10 lumber to construct roofs. The rafters, also called vertical support beams connect the roof with the exterior walls of the home. They are used to support the weight of the roof and are linked with ridge boards that are fastened to the rafter boards. Rafter boards are generally wrapped in insulation or a different material and attached to the faces on the trusses. Ridge beams are utilized as an alternative to rafter boards in the event that the trusses are larger than the ridge boards.
Roof underlayment
Roofers have relied on felt underlayment for years. It's still a popular choice. While it's easy to install and inexpensive, it's not waterproof. Most roofing contractors use 15-pound felt. Thicker felt of 30 pounds is more durable and lasts longer. Roofers are gradually removing felt because of its weak waterproofing capabilities. However, it can be used for certain roofing purposes, including flat roofs.
Metal roofing
Metal roofs are constructed of coils of steel, that are continuous, long rolls. These are then coated and treated. The panels are then cut from the steel to mimic other roofing materials. The panels are then sewn together to form the roof. Roofers should be familiar with terms such as "tin roof" or "steel roofing" since these are not related to metal roofing. However, if you are contemplating installing a metal roof on your house, there are a few points to be aware of.
Wood roofing
The wood species that is used will determine the longevity, a wood roof could last for a long time. If the shingles are not thick enough, however, it can lead to degradation. Other elements that can cause a roof's decline include exposure to rainwater, the kind of shingles that are used, and the slope of the roof. The effects of rainwater, grit UV rays, grit, and wind will all affect the wood shingles.
Trusses pre-fabricated
Traditionally, roofers made trusses out of large pieces of lumber and then put them together on-site, a labor-intensive process that can take up to one week. Roofers do not have to deal any more with the clutter. Trusses that are prefabricated can be constructed in just one day. Because the trusses are able to cover greater distances without the need for interior walls, they can be used to build any type of roof.
